XTERRA Sleeping Giant Off-Road Triathlon
XTERRA is an off-road triathlon event that includes three disciplines swimming, biking and running.
This wilderness race event is held in the spectacular setting of one of Ontario's more renown provincial parks and attracts participants from around the world. Competitors have the opportunity to qualify for the XTERRA World Championships In Maui, Hawaii.
The full triathlon event starts with an 1 km swim in the clean and clear spring fed waters of Marie Louise Lake. Participants then transition to a scenic 24 km mountain bike ride followed by a 17 km run on wilderness trails that are rugged featuring breathtaking views of Lake Superior.
Aside from the full triathlon, there are other off roads events to compete in including a triathlon relay, a short triathlon, a duathlon, or a wilderness trail run. There are a couple of fun runs for kids to take part.
Participation Requirements (if any)
There will be a total race cap of 400 participants across all disciplines. Race kits will be made available at Fresh Air Experience on Thursday August 22 from 4 to 8 pm.
Recommended Places to Stay
For accommodations, there are plenty of campsites and some cabins available at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. If you are planning to drive from Thunder Bay, it is about an hour and 15 minute drive. There are a couple of bed and breakfasts that are a short drive to the park - Eldorado Beach on Lake Superior and Beyond the Giant Nature Retreats.
There are a number of options for your stay in Thunder Bay including the new Haven Hostel if you want to enjoy the food and entertainment. The Haven Hostel offers storage for your bike and indoor space for tuneups. The Haven also rents mountain bikes if you don't want to bring your own.
The Strathcona Motel is another recommended cozy place to stay in the Current River Greenway with quick access to Highway 11/17 from Hodder and just over an hour drive to the park. Another option just off the Trans-Canada Highway east of Thunder Bay is the KOA Campgrounds that offer cabins for rent.
Competitors are encouraged to**register online** for the event they want to compete in.
Sign-up before August 7 and save. The fee for Full Off-Road Triathlon is $103 with the short course triathlon $88.. There are seven events to choose from including a 21 km Trail Run for $75 and a 5 km run for $50.
The prices go up August 8 with the final day to register for the event online August 21.
