Wellstone Memorial and Historic Site

Historic Site

Near this site on October 25, 2002, a plane carrying United States Senator Paul Wellstone crashed en route to the Eveleth airport. In addition to Wellstone, the crash took the lives of his wife Sheila Wellstone, their daughter, three campaign staff members and the planes pilots.

This six acre site is a tribute to Senator Wellstone's life and career, and to the lives of his family and staff who died in the crash. It is divided into three parts: the Legacy Trail, the Commemorative Circle, and the Crash Site Narrative Space.

The site features an Entry Plaza rimmed with 2 billion year old rock which was originally mined at the old Erie Taconite mine, Legacy Trail with interpretive panels about the life and the work of Paul Wellstone, Commemorative Circle with monuments for each of the plane crash victims and the Crash Site Narrative Space - a raised platform/boardwalk with interpretation and memorials. The site is totally accessible; the paths are level with a gravel surface.

Daily, self guided tour is always available
