The Sleeping Giant Loppetis a cross country ski event that takes place in the beautiful wilderness setting of one of Ontario’s most popular parks, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, the first Saturday in March.

This Nordic mass participation event has become a tradition in Thunder Bay celebrating it's 42nd year in 2019. It is the perfect reason for a winter getaway to find out why there is "snowbetterplace” than to visit Northwest Ontario to cross country ski.

The groomed trails prepared by theThunder Bay Nordic Trailsfollow a wooded corridor cut through the boreal forest of this serene parkland on the Sibley Peninsula opening up to sweeping views of Lake Superior as you ski the ledgendary landmark known as the Sleeping Giant.

The Sleeping Giant Loppet is one of the most loved winter events in Northwest Ontario. Whether you are an avid cross-country skier or just looking for a taste of Nordic culture, this popular event is one that you will to cross off your bucket list and say I have "Skied the Giant"!.So plan to visit Thunder Bay in March for one of the most loved winter events in Northwest Ontario.

We welcome participants throughout the area with skiers expected from Manitoba, Wisconsin, Minnesota and communities across Northwest Ontario.

Participation Requirements (if any)

The Sleeping Giant Loppet is open to skiers of all levels and abilities from competitive to beginner.

Families, children and rookies will find 8km Mini-Loppet a perfect distance. If you're ready to increase your distance, then the rolling 20km Marie Louise Lake loop is for you. The 35km Tour is a relaxed event that takes in the scenic vistas and challenging terrain of the storied Burma Trail.
For the ultimate challenge, the Loppet's 50km Classic, Skate or Skiathlon events are ideal for elite skiers vying for one of the generous prize packages or racers looking for a personal best.

Busing is available to race start site at Marie Louise Lake 75 minutes east of Thunder Bay.


On-line registration for the 2019 Sleeping Giant Loppet is open now and will close February 26th. Early registration ends around Feb.1, so save yourself some dollars and sign-up early! Entry fees range pending the event and age group you want to enter.
