Iron Range Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) State Recreation Area
Come and experience 1,200 acres and 30-miles of off-highway vehicle recreation at Minnesota's premier motorized recreation area, located in Gilbert, Minnesota. With 36 miles of OHV trails, whether you ride an off-road motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, 4×4 Jeep or truck, there is something for you!
While you might come for the thrill, a ride to the top of the 200-foot high mountains of ore will provide you a spectacular view of northern Minnesota. This area was mined until 1981 and is a series of abandoned iron ore pits, ore stockpiles and tailings basins. Today the area provides riding opportunities for many skill levels on varied terrain. Trails range from easy to more difficult to most difficult and include recreational trails, challenge areas, scramble areas, hill climbs, rock crawls and training courses. Prepare to get dirty, but when you're day is done we've got you covered with a public washing station.
Managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the park also features safety training and practice facilities for riders of various skill levels. OHV trails and areas are signed with the degree of difficulty for you. There is no charge for admission, but your recreation vehicles must be properly registered for off-road use and be equipped with standard safety equipment and a muffler.
Areas for activities and special events include a multi-purpose event area, 4×4 rock crawl and obstacle course, tough-truck competition course, sand and mud drags, hill climbs, motorcycle track, observed trails, snowmobile events, bicycle motocross or mountain bike events and more. Planning and land acquisition are currently underway for a proposed 3,500 acre addition to the park.
