The Iron Range Historical Society was incorporated in 1973, the first historical society on the Mesabi Iron Range. At present, the all-volunteer, charitable trust, nonprofit Iron Range Historical Society is governed by a 9 member Board of Directors. The Mission of the Society is to collect, preserve and share our materials.

The Iron Range Historical Society is handicap-accessible, has photos and artifacts on display, does not charge admission and serves the general public with moderate fees. Historical displays and records are there for your browsing. The museum houses information from all three of Minnesota's Iron Ranges. Members receive free research time, but pay for copies of printed materials. The Society also has most area obituaries from 1978 to the present date. Our collection of local newspapers dating from 1888 to 2007 contain many obituaries and historical articles.

The Iron Range Historical Society has numerous archives containing information on Iron Range occupations and the various cities, towns and townships in this region, and also manuscripts on Iron Range life in the past. Our files contain many 50, 75, and 100 year anniversary booklets for local cities and towns.

The Historical Society has a collection of more than 20,000 photographs in 80 albums, many of them unique and original. These may be used for display or family histories. More than 50 books contain acknowledgements on the Iron Range Historical Society by their authors. Our Research Library contains many books dealing with Iron Range matters such as ethnic influences and recipes, immigration, work experiences, and family life. We are not a lending library, but pages of information may be copied for research purposes. The Society also has several new books for sale. These were written with the assistance of, and some of them published by, the Iron Range Historical Society.
