Areas of Service and Expertise

Day Tripper of Duluth guides are very experienced and highly qualified:

1) Jake: Jake is a NREMT-Paramedic, is certified in BLS/ALS/ACLS/PALS/ITLS, and is a member of the National Mountain Bike Patrol and National Ski Patrol.

After nearly three decades (not there yet) of exploring Northern Minnesota, Jake knows just about every rock and root in the area.

The Duluth native was practically paddling the lakes of the Boundary Waters before he could walk. He grew up racing for a local high school ski team and later went to race for the nordic ski and bike team for St. Olaf. He had the opportunity to participate in many races, including the Nature Valley Grand Prix, Heck of the North (first place), and Classic American Birkiebiner (second place). He is also a USA Cycling Expert Mountain Biker.

At St. Olaf, he earned a degree in German and business management, but he realized that the his office needed to be outside. He's had multiple coaching jobs ranging from rowing to cross country skiing. He has also worked as a bike and ski mechanic at Ski Hut. He is currently a paramedic in the Duluth area and now is sharing his passion for outdoor adventure and education with Day Tripper of Duluth.

2) Matti: Matti is certified in Wilderness First Aid, in CPR and AED, and has Wilderness Water Safety certification for wilderness lifeguarding and life saving (and co-teaches the certification course). Matti is also certified as a Professional Wilderness Guide in the country of Finland and earned his MEEd from UMD.

Matti is a native of Duluth, who began guiding at Wilderness Canoe Base in the Boundary Waters during college. After college, he moved to Finland where he got a college degree in Nature Tourism as well as a Professional Wilderness Guide Degree.

Returning to Minnesota, Matti taught as a Naturalist at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center for two years, guided Wolf Ridge trips for three summers, and worked as a Naturalist and Songbird bander at Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth for three fall seasons. Matti received his Master's Degree in Environmental Education (MEEd) from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Matti is a naturalist and jack of all trades when it comes to the outdoors and guiding world.

3) Kaitlin: Kaitlin is certified as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR), in CPR and AED, and has Wilderness Water Safety certification for wilderness lifeguarding and life saving. She also earned a Masters Degree in Environmental Education from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Kaitlin has been canoeing and skiing since she was two. With over 10 years of guiding and naturalist training and experience, she loves to share the natural world with people of all ages. Kaitlin is an environmental educator and the director of a nature preschool in Duluth.
