Chippewa City Church (St. Francis Xavier Church)
Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church has historical ties to Grand Marais. Known by the locals as "Chippewa City Church, this location is one of the last remnants of a once vibrant community.
It was built in 1895 under the direction of Father Specht. It served as the only Catholic church in Grand Marais from 1895-1916. As people started to leave Grand Marais the us of the church diminished until 1936 when the final mass was conducted on Christmas.
In 1958 restoration began and in 1985 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998 the church was donated to the Cook County Historical Society and with grant help from Grand Portage Band of Chippewa and the Minnesota Historical Society helped restorations continue.
