Campfire Island Camp on Rainy Lake
Rainy Lake at its best!
Campfire Island is an 11-acre island on Sand Bay just south of the Noden Causeway. Both the South Arm and the North Arm of Rainy Lake are literally right around the corner of the island. The awesome smallmouth bass fishery that Rainy Lake offers is world-class. The northern Pike are big and aggressive. Near the end of June, the walleyes move out to the open water and these walleyes are definitely photo material.
Fishing - especially smallmouth bass fishing - is the main focus.
Rainy Lake also provides a magnificent outdoor adventure for those who would like to experience part of the historical voyageur route through the area and see some of the local sights like The Mermaid and The Eagle Sanctuary. A must-do is a traditional Canadian shorelunch that is very much part of the whole Lake Experience! Private sand beach on site.
In the heart of Fort Frances, is Sorting Gap Marina where we meet guests. There is ample parking and it is a very short boat-ride to Campfire Island.
Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes
The island was first deeded in 1903 to Reginald Keating, son of the first Mayor of Fort Frances. The lodge was built in 1910 with beautiful large spruce logs, and they still portray quite an image to this day. The Peabody Coal Company owned the island for many years, and in the 1950's it was won (in a card game) by Brown Badgett. Mr. Badgett constructed his own paradise which he visited for many years. In 1997, it returned to Canadian hands when local entrepreneurs Wayne, Pat & Dean Howard became the owners.
Be prepared...... Rainy Lake will get your attention! ...and Campfire Island will capture your heart!!
