The cliffs at the Bluffs are about 40 feet at the highest point, and the bottom can be accessed either by rappelling down from a top rope anchor, or by 1 of the many scrambles. The Crag has around 130 named routes, the majority of which are top rope climbing, with some traditional and few mixed and aid. Climbs are rated from 5.4 – 5.12, which makes it accessible to climbers of all skill levels.

About this Climbing Area

“The Bluffs” climbing area is over 35 years old, and one of the first ones developed that really started the climbing bug in Thunder Bay and surrounding area. The Bluffs are a popular spot to climb for all levels and walks of life due to its access within city limits at Boulevard Lake.

The top of the cliffs boast an incredible view of the Sleeping Giant, the Nor’Westers mountain range, and Thunder Bay as a whole. The area is also a popular spot for bikers, walkers, and runners.

One of the local climbing gurus, Aric Fishman, has recently released a full detail climbing guide book of Thunder Bay and the surrounding area, in which The Bluffs are included.

Best Seasons for Climbing

Summer for ease of access and fall for the spectacular colours probably rank as the best.

Best Access and Parking Areas

The Bluffs is accessible via an unmarked road, which leads to a parking lot off Arundel Street, near Boulevard Lake. From the parking lot, the crag begins after about a 5 minute walk in through a small section of the Port Arthur woods.
