Bay & Algoma Neighbourhood

Community, Cultural District
You can feel the European influences when you are standing on the corner of Bay Street and Algoma Street. You are in the heart of the Bay & Algoma Neighbourhood! – Stephanie Reid

This neighbourhood is the heart of the city's Finnish and Italian ethnic communities with over sixty locally owned and operated businesses, specializing in friendly, personalized service.

The Bay & Algoma Neighbourhood offers a collection of locally owned shops, cafes, and restaurants situated around the pedestrian friendly Bay St. and the Algoma St corridor.

It is a destination for cyclists, tourists, shoppers and foodies of all sorts. Come and enjoy a homestyle meal in one of our many restaurants. Visit our unique stores and businesses which offer you special gifts, hard to find items, diverse services, as well as every day items.

HISTORY OF AREA
The area celebrates Thunder Bay's Finnish, Italian and Scandinavian heritage with three cultural centres located near the Bay/Algoma intersection.

This is one of Thunder Bay's original business areas as it was a hot spot for migrant workers and their families for decades.

It is said Thunder Bay has the largest Finnish populations outside of Finland and the Nordic heritage is front and centre on Bay St. with the historic Finnish Labour Temple housing the world famous Hoito Restaurant.
