Arrowhead State Trail

Hiking Trail or Trailhead

Located among the mix of hardwoods and pinelands of northern Minnesota, this natural-surface trail stretches 135 miles from near Tower, Minnesota to Ericsburg, near International Falls and the Canada border. The trail passes through the communities of Tower, Cook, Orr and International Falls – all of which offer parking, gas, food and lodging. Snowmobilers, who are the predominant users of this trail, will pass through rolling hills of the Kabetogama and Sturgeon River State Forests and around numerous lakes and streams within the Superior National Forest. Mountain bikers and horseback riders also enjoy the trail during summer months and appreciate the colorful attraction it becomes in autumn. Because much of the trail navigates through wetlands, approximately 69 miles of the trail are suitable for use during non-frozen months.

The Arrowhead State Trail intersects with the Taconite State Trail 10 miles south of Tower. The Taconite State Trail then connects the town of Grand Rapids to Ely, Minnesota. Camping is available along this section of trail at McCarthy Beach State Park, Pfeifer Lake National Forest, Bear Head Lake State Park and several rustic campsites along the way. The Taconite State Trail passes through the communities of Grand Rapids, Tower, Ely and Side Lake.
